Scottish Executive Child Strategy Statement

13th Mar 2007

This statement sets out the Scottish Executive's aim of 'child-proofing' all policies that affect children either directly or indirectly, to ensure that they identify and take proper account of children's interests, with specific reference to the Convention. The statement was first issued by the Scottish Office in 1997 and revised by the Scottish Executive in 2000 and has not been updated since.

The Statement is supported by the Scottish Executive's seven point strategic 'vision for children and young people in Scotland', which underpins key policy documents and includes the aim that children be:

Respected and responsible: Children, young people and their carers should be involved in decisions that affect them, should have their voices heard and should be encouraged to play an active and responsible role in their communities.

It should be noted that SCCYP and other organisations have been unable to find evidence of its widespread or routine use by departments of the Scottish Executive .
